Aftershocks after Disappointing performance of Congress in Haryana elections it continued to gain ground even in Uttar Pradesh, with the Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav — a key member of the INDIA Bloc — rejecting the old party’s bid to share the polls in 10 Assembly seats later this year.
The Congress has sought five out of ten seats in the upcoming contest, but the Samajwadi Party has refused, citing the party’s performance in the April-June general elections and the recent Haryana polls.
The Samajwadi Party on Wednesday announced its candidates for six of the 10 Uttar Pradesh assembly seats that will go to polls later this year. The official polling date is yet to be announced by the Election Commission.
SP has fielded Tej Pratap Yadav from Karhal, while it has given ticket to Naseem Solanki from Sisamu seat, Mustafa Siddiqui from Phulpur (Prayagraj), and Ajit Prasad from Milkipur (Ayodhya), according to the party list released on X. Shobhawai Verma and Jyodi Bind have been given party tickets from Katehari and Majhwan seats, respectively, it said.
Responding to the issue, SP leader Ravidas Mehrotra took a potshot at the Congress over the Haryana debate and said that they did not give a single seat to the Samajwadi Party but gave the entire state to the BJP.
“If Congress had an alliance with Samajwadi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), today the INDIA alliance would have ruled Haryana. Congress did not give a single seat to Samajwadi Party but gave the entire state to BJP. We want to defeat BJP in the by-elections in UP, so we have announced the list of 6 candidates,” Mehrotra said while talking to. news agency ANI.
Mehrotra also said that his party hopes to form an alliance with the Congress in the remaining 4 seats.
Meanwhile, UP Congress chief Avinash Pandey expressed disappointment over the Samajwadi Party announcing candidates without consulting the coordination committee of the INDIA alliance.
“It is true, no details have been given to us about it. It has not been discussed with the coordination committee of INDIA alliance. Regarding the announcement of seats and the election of candidates, whatever decision the Coordination Committee of INDIA alliance takes, will be accepted by the Congress Committee of Uttar Pradesh,” Pandey said. “We are not overconfident in Uttar Pradesh but we are fully confident and because of this, along with strengthening and empowering the organization, the work of preparing for the elections has started. The possibilities (of cooperation) remain until the end, they cannot be denied, ” ” he added.
