When it comes to the mental health of students on the campuses of educational institutions, it is important to ensure that help is available, affordable and accepted by the community, said Vice Admiral Dr. IIT) Bombay on World Mental Health Day on Thursday.
Dr. Murthy stressed that academic pressures or other pressures that cause mental health problems are challenges that are not limited to IITs but are the same all over the world. “And every time there is a sad incident, it makes us think about what can be done better,” he said.
In addition to making it available mental health support on campusesDr. Murthy said, “We can also change the culture on campuses when it comes to the pressure many young students face, whether it’s their performance in the classroom, or the job they will get afterwards. We want young people to dream and succeed but not at the expense of their mental health.” He also emphasized on the “reinvention” of the ways of using social networks that create competition between users.
In a program titled ‘Mind matters for well-being’ held at the IIT Bombay campus on Thursday, Dr. Murthy also spoke with Ira Khan, daughter of actor Amir Khan who is also the Founder and CEO of the Agatsu Foundation which provides mental health services. .
Dr. Murthy appreciated that there is a wide awareness among the IIT Bombay leadership about mental health and acknowledged the institute’s investment and efforts in this regard.
Director of IIT Bombay, Prof. Shireesh Kedare said, “We want the campus to be a fun place. Today’s event underscores the importance of a very important topic in the high pressure environment of IIT Bombay.” He also shared the different plans taken by the institution to effectively support mental health in the institution.
