The suspect in the death of a UnitedHealthcare executive appears to have made “a lot of mistakes,” according to New York City’s longtime police commissioner, but there is one clue that makes it “just a matter of time” before he is locked up.
“The distribution of his picture, I’ve never seen anything like this and it was probably in every newspaper in America, and almost every TV station put that picture. So I think it’s just a matter of time,” Ray. Kelly said on “Mornings with Maria” on Monday.
“He made a lot of mistakes,” he continued. “Obviously, this is one of them, the picture where he’s smiling at the desk clerk. And that’s a good picture.”
The manhunt for the man who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has entered its sixth day, after Thompson was shot early Wednesday morning outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.

After opening fire, the suspect fled on a bicycle into the streets of the Big Apple and led to a manhunt. Police found a backpack linked to the murder that contained a jacket and Monopoly money and have not released a motive, although bullet boxes were found at the scene with the words “deny,” “depose” and “defend” on them.

A number of photos of the suspect have been released to the public, including a photo of his face while flirting with a hostel worker before being shot, reports said.
“Facial recognition is very effective these days. Some police departments don’t use it unless they’re looking at people who have been arrested. So [a] “It’s kind of restrictive, but facial recognition works, and I hope it’s used this time,” Kelly explained.

“I think it’s just a matter of time, and I think it’s worked well so far.”
Police believe the gunman eventually walked to a bus stop in Upper Manhattan and boarded public transportation.

“I think it’s very easy to miss him… It makes sense that he would do that. And we don’t know: Did he go to the airport?” Kelly stopped. “Did you take the bus to the airport? [to] at the airport?”
“They are sure that this person has left the city. So it will change their mind,” added the former police commissioner. “There are detectives in Atlanta, the FBI is helping the NYPD, and these things take time. It’s understandable that it takes time.”
