The Uttar Pradesh government has two jail officials in charge of the Moradabad jail for allowing a Samajwadi Party (SP) delegation to meet those accused of the recent violence in Sambhal, for allegedly violating the jail order.

Jailor Vikram Yadav and his deputy Praveen Singh have been suspended. The Senior Superintendent of Moradabad Jail may also face action.

The UP police arrested 30 people, including women. SP member Zia Ur Rahman was also booked for allegedly playing a hot role with his speeches.

A team of SP, including former MP ST Hasan and other senior party leaders, met the accused in the case on December 2 at the Moradabad district jail, assuring their help to those who were “falsely arrested”.

Violence erupted on November 24, during a court-ordered search of the Mughal mosque, the Shahi Jama Masjid, after allegations that a shrine was located on the site. Protesters clashed with police in UP, leading to heavy stone pelting and alleged gunfire as police used ‘low power’ to control the situation.

The UP police have not denied the charges of firing at the protesters. The Supreme Court has now directed the Sambhal trial court to suspend its investigation and other proceedings in the case.
