Tom Wilson scored his second goal of the game at 4:00 of overtime to lift the Washington Capitals to a 6-5 win against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday in Newark, NJ.
Wilson stepped into a two-on-one, kept the puck and fired a wrist shot from Jacob Markstrom. He scored in his fourth straight preseason game and added an assist for the Capitals, who have won three straight.
Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season and moved within 41 of Wayne Gretzky (894 goals) for first place all-time. Logan Thompson made 26 saves to earn the win.
Nico Hischier had two goals and an assist for the Devils, who came through twice in a two-goal loss to force overtime. Markstrom made 31 saves.
New Jersey’s Dougie Hamilton tied the score at 5-5 at 12:28 of the third period, hitting one from the high post on the power play.
Erik Haula gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 4:45 of the first period when he hit a sharp angle off the left boards.
Wilson tied the score at 6:01, hitting a wrist shot in the gap past Connor McMichael’s backhand. He tied the Capitals record for consecutive games to start the season.
McMichael gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead when he knocked in at 10:14.
Ovechkin made it 3-1 at 14:18 when John Carlson’s shot deflected off him.
Hischier tied the score when he scored two goals 10 seconds apart, the fastest two goals by one player in Devils history.
Hischier pulled the Devils within 3-2 when he scored off Stefan Noesen behind the net 34 seconds into the second period. He tied the score at 3-3 when he got a turnover right after the next play and beat Thompson at the 44-second mark.
The Capitals got a goal back when a pass from Trevor van Riemsdyk sent Andrew Mangiapane alone for the halftime goal at 9:15.
Dylan Strome made it 5-3 at 12:33 when he deflected a van Riemsdyk shot past Markstrom.
Mercer pulled the Devils within 4-3 at 3:39 of the third period when he scored on Hischier’s rushing puck.
