The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday announced its candidates for the November 13 elections in six districts of West Bengal, relying heavily on local and youth candidates. The poll was necessary because the MPs vacated six seats in the Assembly after winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In Madarihat and Sitai seats, the TMC candidates are Jayprakash Toppo and Sangita Roy, respectively. Falguni Singhababu will be the candidate from Taldangra of Bankura.
The party’s city president Sanat Dey has been elected as a TMC member from Naihati Assembly. The seat fell open after TMC MP Partha Bhowmik won the Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency, defeating BJP candidate Arjun Singh.
West Midnapore TMC president Sujoy Hazra will contest Medinipur bypoll. “If Hazra becomes a member of Parliament and the president of the district party at the same time, his leadership will be strengthened in the district. So the party leadership is considering his name for this seat,” said another senior TMC leader.
In Haroa, which opened after Haji Nurul Islam became a Member of Parliament, the party chose Rabiul Islam, the son of senior leader Haji Islam, who died last month.
