Gilchrist introduced himself to Chalamet and Fanning by joking, “First, I want to let you know that I’m filling in for you.”
Fanning, 26, replied, “Thank you, I’m surprised!” Chalamet, 29, agreed with his assessment, adding, “Yes, I was surprised.”
The couple then put their infamous one-finger grip to good use, which Grande, 31, gave Erivo, 37, last month.

Fanning admitted that she and Chalamet won’t be able to top Erivo and Grande’s moment no matter what they do.
“There’s nothing we can do to admit what happened, you know what I mean?” Fanning said. “We can try.”
The “holding area” meme started in November when Gilchrist chatted with Erivo and Grande during a seemingly endless meeting. They are not bad press visit. The reporter, who remembered by heart that he was “in the media,” told the couple that he had seen people online “holding up space” for the words “Defying Gravity.”
Erivo replied that he had not seen that in person but he looked upset as he said that is what he wants the fans to get from his performance as Elphaba. Meanwhile, Grande turned to him for support, but instead of holding her costar’s hand, she grabbed just one finger.

“So I didn’t know what part of it meant,” the pop star said Variety earlier this month. “I don’t understand the first sentence. And then I didn’t understand what happened and how [Cynthia] answered. I said, ‘Wow, what did you say, what did you hear?’ And I just wanted to be there because I knew something big was happening. And I didn’t know how I was going to be there.”
Grande went on to say that she grabbed Erivo’s finger because she thought her money “might need something” but she admitted that she didn’t know why she started tapping her finger.
Like the rest of the internet, however, Grande loved memes.
“I feel really relieved that the world has had the same experience that I’ve had, because I felt like, ‘Oh, I’m not broken,'” she laughed. “Best to hold space for that.”
