Despite the support of Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Emily in Paris it has many critics in France who hate that the show gives a distorted view of the real Paris. To no one’s surprise, the Netflix series offers a romantic and beautiful version of the city. It helps to contextualize why Emily loves the city, but some argue that it sets expectations for tourists and foreigners that the real Paris can’t live up to.
And while fan Emmanuel Macron is at the top of the French government, other officials (especially those working in Paris) have offered direct criticism of the show. For example, Green’s deputy mayor for transport and public spaces David Belliard expressed anger that the exhibition did not include green transport or address the ongoing climate crisis. He hates how Emily in Paris glorifying historic apartment buildings whose beauty and history hides how closed and unfriendly they are in nature.
