Prisoners in Telangana will now get higher daily allowances for their work, according to a new Government Order (GO) aimed at improving their welfare and skills.
According to the GO, highly skilled prisoners will receive a daily compensation of ₹200, and skilled prisoners, who previously earned R70 per day, will see their incentive jump to R150, marking a 114% increase. The less skilled prisoners will get ₹125 per day compared to the previous rate of ₹50. For unskilled prisoners, the incentive increased from R30 to R100, representing an increase of about 233%.
Director General of Jails and Correctional Services, Telangana, Saumya Mishra has been directed to ensure immediate implementation of the revised incentives. The necessary funds for this development will be allocated from specific provisions of the budget, said a Government Order issued on October 1 by Special Chief Secretary to the Government Ravi Gupta with the approval of the Ministry of Finance.
This program is expected to have a positive impact on the prisoners by improving their economic conditions and providing an opportunity to develop skills. “By making work more rewarding, the government aims to support rehabilitation efforts, and ultimately help prisoners return to society after their release,” said a prison official.
