When the Arecibo Telescope was first damaged by Hurricane Maya in 2017 and then by an earthquake in January 2020, it started with the military. But one of its cables broke, requiring replacement in the US, in August of 2020, followed by a second cable that snapped a few months later.
When the second cable was untied, the observatory was removed, and a few months later, in December, the telescope collapsed.
A National Science Foundation (NSF) study found that it would be impossible to repair the damage, and in August 2023 it was closed. Once the shutdown was complete, NSF began accepting proposals for what to do with the site to remove its giant radio telescope.
