Although it’s a year-round classic, denim is an essential piece of a fall capsule wardrobe. As we move into the cooler months, more often than not, jeans are the foundation of every outfit I wear. This season, designers are reimagining this wardrobe staple in new and exciting ways, finding the perfect balance between timeless appeal and modern sophistication. We’ve seen the ebb and flow of skinny jeans, the unexpected resurgence of low-cut styles, and even a flirtation with capris, but which fall 2024 denim trends will define this season?

Grace Na
Grace Na is the founder and Creative Director of LA Denim brand Pistola. Known for their stunning designs (approved by Greta Gerwig) and carried by over 1,000 retailers nationwide including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Shopbop, Pistola quickly became one of the leading voices in the denim market as an established denim brand by women.
Top Denim Styles for Fall 2024
While the classic straight leg jean is always the go-to, fall is a great time to have a little fun with different denims. When asked what trends will take over denim trends in fall 2024, Na points to three top fashion trends we’ll see everywhere this season.
- Barrel/balloon denim leg. This structured silhouette gained popularity in the fall of 2023 and is not going anywhere. While the exaggerated bow leg look may seem crazy at first, I’ve found that the shape is universally flattering and automatically makes the dress more flattering.
- Very wide leg denim. We all know that skinny jeans are rumored to be dead, but the complete opposite is true for fall 2024. Na explains that comfort is always important when shopping for denim, and jeans are becoming increasingly looser and wider this fall. Wide, low-slung, comfortable jeans pair well with a more fitted top for an upscale, but relaxed night out.
- Deliberately distressed denim. Perhaps my favorite of the fall 2024 denim trends, oversized cuffed jeans are taking over the streets and my Instagram feed. Small and simple, this design is perfect for anyone looking to subtly add a trendy touch to their fall wardrobe.
Trending Denim Color Palettes and Washes for Fall 2024
Na’s simple answer, black denim and washed-out classics are her autumn washes. While light and medium wash jeans can certainly be styled with browns, blacks, and burgundies in the fall, a dark, slightly faded color palette will be popular this season. Red is still everywhere, and Na notes that it will continue to trend in ready-to-wear denim in fall 2024.
Dos and Don’ts of Styling Fall 2024 Denim Trends
I couldn’t be more excited to style denim for fall, and Na’s tips will be my guiding principles all season long.
Do:
- Wear denim on denim, Canadian tuxedos are classic for a reason.
- Feel free to mix and match the denim wash, it adds depth to the outfit.
- Your denim is your denim, don’t be afraid to cut the inseam to fit your height (it’s easier than it seems).
Don’t:
- Wear skinny pants with a slim top, the combination is what makes the outfit fun.
- Stick only to the size you normally wear, try on a few sizes to see what fits you best.
- Don’t be afraid to try all the exciting new brands that come out! You might surprise yourself.
If you prefer a skinnier denim silhouette, but don’t want to feel outdated, “a little straightness is the new skin.” Sticking to an ankle-length, cropped fit, styled with an oversized shirt, jacket, or sweater, is an easy, trendy fall look that will still make you feel like yourself.
As for herself, Na will be rocking lots of denim tops and bottoms together and separates this fall. What she will do is combine baggier denim with many fitted tops, and complete her look with socks and loafers.
Denim Trends for Fall 2024: 15 of Our Favorite Pairs to Buy
Pistola Ryder High Rise is bound
If you’re looking for a one-off pair of pants that will capture all the denim trends for fall 2024, this is it. Black wash, wide leg, and purposely cuffed, these are low-key statement jeans.
Rolla’s Gigi Barrel Forever Jeans
Barrel leg denim will be the defining silhouette for fall, and this pair of black bathing suits from Rolla has just the right amount of shape. Not too much, yet still so cute, I can’t wait to style these all season long.
Anine Bing Gavin Jean
I firmly believe that the girls in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants wore the Anine Bing Gavin Jean. They’re a great way to have fun: mid-wash, mid-rise, baggy-but-not-too-baggy, cropped-but-not-too-cropped. If you’re looking for an investment jean that transcends the season’s trends, these are 10/10.
Abercrombie High Rise 90s Loose Jean
At the same time as one of the most affordable and most comfortable pairs I own, these Abercrombie jeans are a great option for fall. They are small enough to style with big loops and wide enough to style with boots. I’ve turned almost all of my friends into these jeans, so it’s only fair that I let you in on the secret, too.
Free People x We Free Fortune Mid Rise Jean
Another great affordable option for the barrel leg trend, these Free People jeans have been a staple in my closet since last fall. I love that the black wash can be dressed up with heels at night and down with a pair of loafers during the day.
Rolla sailor Jean Long
If you’re looking for a wide leg jean that’s both high-rise and tailored, look no further than the Sailor Jean by Rolla. I’ll be rocking these with a white teal bootie literally every day this fall. This style runs small, so be sure to size up!
Madewell The Darted Barrel-Leg Jean
These jeans were love at first sight. Everything from the shape to the color to the styling immediately drew me in. With a similar look to the Nili Lotan Shon Pant for a third of the price, this is worth signing up for stock alerts when your size is sold out.
Pistola Lana High Rise Ultra Wide
Off-white is one of my favorite fall styles. These wide leg jeans from Pistola are perfect to pair with cream fabrics, chocolate brown suede, and true blue denim tops this season.
SLVRLAKE Taylor Wide Pleated Jeans
SLVRAKE’s Taylor Wide Pleated Jeans offer a new take on classic denim, combining vintage-inspired pleats with a modern wide-leg silhouette. Although definitely on the pricier side, my SLVRAKE jeans are one of my favorites and will be a fall staple for years to come.
Levi’s 501 Straight
Sometimes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Levi’s has been making beautiful, timeless denim for centuries, and these will stay in your closet for hundreds of falls to come. Major style points for a worn, classic pair of 501s.
AGOLDE Low Slung Baggy
We all know that comfort is key when it comes to denim, and these baggy jeans from AGOLDE might just be sweat pants. Perfect for cool fall days and nights, these are jeans to stay in. I like to style mine with women’s ballet flats to contrast the baggy style. Agolde jeans run on the larger side, so if you’re in the middle, I’d take your size smaller.
Reformation Cary Low Rise Slouchy Wide Leg Jeans
Fitted all over with a wide leg, these slimming jeans are right on the nose of denim trends for fall 2024. This amazing shade of charcoal will be a great style with black dresses and black boots in the fall.
Frame The Bubble Jean
These jeans have lived rent-free in my mind since I saw them listed in an Instagram ad. The bath is a unique, inky blue color, and the bubble structure is flattering, interesting, and fun. The model wore pants below, looking at both the barrel and cuff styles for fall 2024.
Madewell The Rail Straight Jean
While some trends come and go, we all need a classic pair of straight leg, dark to mid wash jeans for fall. These will go with everything in your closet, will last for years, and won’t break the bank. What more could you ask for in a pair of pants?
Parke Low Rise Baggy Jeans
Touching both seasonal styles and colors, Parke’s latest launch is a great place to shop denim trends for fall 2024. Since there is a similar jacket available, I am personally looking at both the red and camel styles… but I may have to get both.
