It seems that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a ubiquitous business, taking over the workplace almost everywhere, including the courts. In a first-of-its-kind exchange, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Thursday joined an AI lawyer at the inauguration of the National Judicial Museum and Archive (NJMA) at the Supreme Court.
Chandrachud asked the AI ​​lawyer whether the death penalty is legal in India.
“Yes, the death penalty is legal in India. It is reserved for rare cases as decided by the Supreme Court where the crime is very serious and gives such punishment,” replied the AI ​​lawyer, wearing a lawyer’s coat, mocking Chandrachud and other lawyers present at the event.
Chandrachud has talked about the capabilities of AI, promoting the use of technology in “bringing justice” as well.
At the opening of the museum, he said, “This took about a year and a half of thinking and planning. The actual execution took about six months.”
“It was done in record time. We thought we should have not only a museum but a museum comparable to the best in the world to show the importance of our institution and high courts in bringing justice to our citizens and protecting the fundamental rights of our citizens,” he added.
Chandrachud is expected to retire as the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 10, and will be succeeded by Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
