In an open letter to fans, Jerry Reinsdorf, the owner of the Chicago White Sox, described the losing season that made the team’s history as “shameful” and “disappointing”, for which he took full responsibility. Despite a 9-5 final game victory against Detroit, the season ended on a sad note for the White Sox with a 41-121 record. This record surpassed the previous post-1900 record for losses, held by the 1962 New York Mets who finished their first season 40-120. Reinsdorf, who has managed the White Sox since 1981, and the NBA’s Chicago Bulls since 1985, recalled the painful moments of the season.
Reinsdorf’s Commitment to Improving Team Performance
Reinsdorf expressed his commitment to improving team performance, saying “We see, every day, that it is our responsibility to earn trust, attention, time, and support. We promise that we will take this approach every day as we strive to improve this off-season.”
Interim Manager Grady Sizemore’s Stint and Future Prospects
After Pedro Grifol was fired, Grady Sizemore took over as interim manager on August 8th and guided Chicago to a 13-32 (.289) record. Despite the challenging year, Sizemore remained optimistic, pointing out that they can build and improve from this experience. He praised his team’s effort during the last few games, especially their win against the hottest team in baseball, Detroit.
The Future of the White Sox: Identifying New Leadership
General Manager Chris Getz expressed that Sizemore may be in the managerial position. Reinsdorf emphasized the importance of finding new leadership for the group, saying “The most important decision of our organization in the coming months is to evaluate and identify a new manager and voice of leadership for this organization. Chris is continuing this search.” It remains to be seen who will hold the reins to guide the White Sox back to winning ways.
