Well, The beast Season 2, episode 9 should have aired.
Things in both silos are now reaching a boiling point, as Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) prepares for her trip back out after Solo’s (Steve Zahn) revelation and things are approaching a high street in the home silo. But when it all started, newly promoted head of IT shadow Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) was trying to solve his own mystery.
And at the end of episode 9, it looks like he might have some answers.

What happened to Lukas at the end of episode 9?
Since his promotion to shadow, Lukas has been trying to crack the code left behind by former head of IT Salvador Quinn – the same code that Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie) solved 25 years ago. In episode 9 he concludes, revealing the following message (part of which we see scrawled in his notebook):
“…the reason for being abandoned. If you don’t believe me, go down to the bottom of the silo. Find the tunnel. You will find confirmation there.”
Later, a flustered Lukas says that “the beast’s life” depends on him finding the mayor. But when he is told that the mayor should not be disturbed until that day, he gets a hold of himself and goes down to the silo. However, when he found the tunnel mentioned in the paper, he suddenly heard a loud robot voice calling his name.
“Before you, only three people have reached this door,” said the voice. “Salvador Quinn, Mary Meadows, and George Wilkins. I didn’t talk to Wilkins. Quinn and Meadows were both given the same guidance you’re going to get now. If you talk to anyone about this conversation, or what you saw down here, we have no choice but to start protecting. You know what protection, Mr. Kyle?”

Lukas’ nervous response? “I agree.”
Who is the voice speaking to Lukas?
The short answer is we don’t know. But we can make a guess. As Lukas talks to Bernard (Tim Robbins) at the beginning of the episode, we now know that there are many traps. Fifty-one, to be exact. Whoever is talking to Lukas seems to have some sort of higher authority, as they have been issuing “directives” to the heads of IT at Monster 18. Could it be that the person talking to Lukas is the IT head of another monster? Maybe the one who has authority over all the other dungeons?
Another option is that the voice may not be human at all. It sounds a bit robotic, so there’s always the possibility that it’s some kind of all-powerful artificial intelligence controlling all the cells.
What is protection?
If the word refers to a “guard,” it is clearly a threat. If Lukas tells anyone about what he heard or saw, he will have “no choice but to invent it”. Obviously, the shield is not something designed to keep the occupants of Silo 18 safe. So what exactly is it?
Once again, we don’t know for sure yet. It’s clearly something that was in Quinn’s code, and the phrase we see in Lukas’s notes – “…a reason to be abandoned” – seems terrifying. What seems more alarming is that Quinn, the former head of IT, felt he needed to hide the meaning of the code, and the fact that whatever Judge Meadows learned when he broke the code drove him to start drinking.
In short, whatever the protection is, it’s something that makes the residents of Silo 18 feel powerless and afraid. Maybe it’s a shield meant to protect the owner of the voice, as well as the other chariots, if they sense that the Beast 18 is starting to get out of control?
