Buyers who paid at least $93,990 to be among the first to own (and beta test) Tesla’s Cybertruck are finally getting the key, promised feature: Full Self-Driving (FSD). Several people on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum – including the Angeleno who posted the video – said it ended up arriving early to select users, Electrek report.
After Tesla promised that FSD will come to Cybertrucks in September, the supervised version 12.5.5 v12 (latest available) is being sent, but only to users in the early access program. That means the feature (included in the Tesla Cybertruck Foundation package) won’t be available to most buyers for at least another month, based on Tesla’s FSD history.
The FSD performed well in the short time shown, according to the video above from the Cybertruck Owner’s Club user forum espresso-drumbeat. It steered the car through the city and onto the freeway before reaching I5 towards LA, all on a narrow evening road.
According to the update description, FSD (Guarded) v12 integrates vision-based monitoring with sunglasses and integrates city and highway into a single software stack. In other words, it is the first version of fully managing driving using end-to-end AI.
Cybertruck deliveries started 10 months ago, so the FSD has been a long time coming. A recent test by independent automotive testing group AMCI determined that Tesla’s FSD can travel only 13 miles on average before requiring human intervention.
Elon Musk recently promised unsupervised self-driving by the end of 2025, but he’s been making that claim for almost 10 years and we’re still not there. There is more pressure now than ever, as the company will unveil its FSD-based robotics product on October 10.
