Tamil Nadu minister S Regupathy called Gujarat a “drug capital” after Governor RN Ravi said the ruling DMK government had failed to control the flow of synthetic drugs and that the Tamil Nadu police had failed to arrest drugs.
In a statement, the minister criticized Ravi for making such statements without knowing the facts. He asked why Governor Ravi did not express concern about Gujarat, which according to Regupathy, has become a hotbed of drug-related activities.
“Three years down the line, I have come across many stories of ganja seizures. How is it that big agencies can seize hundreds of kilograms of synthetic drugs and chemicals while our government agencies can’t even seize a gram!” Governor Ravi asked.
Regupathy asked whether the Governor had the right to criticize the state government as it had withheld permission for over a year to register drug-related cases against former AIADMK ministers.
“Why is the governor not talking about the BJP men who are involved in drug related cases across India? Why is he talking about the drug capital Gujarat?” Regupathy asked.
He further said that the anti-narcotics policy was introduced in the state after the DMK government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin.
Regupathy said that 10,256 cases were filed against 14,770 people in 2023 and accused Governor Ravi of talking about the drug issue without realizing such statistics.
“In 2023, 10,256 cases were opened against 14,770 people, 23,364 kilos of ganja, 0.953 kilos of heroin, 39,910 pills, 1,230 kilos of ganja chocolate and other types of drugs, including methamphetamine, were arrested on August 7. 6,053 cases were registered, 15,092 kilograms of ganja, 90,833 pills, 93 kilograms of methamphetamine and other types of drugs have been seized,” said Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathy.
