STOCKHOLM (AP) – Swedish police said Thursday they will participate as observers as Chinese authorities investigate a Chinese-flagged ship in the Baltic Sea that was spotted in the area where two undersea communications cables were damaged last month.
Sweden’s prime minister said at the end of November that his country had officially asked China to cooperate in explaining the cable break, which occurred in Swedish waters.
Authorities in Sweden, Finland and Lithuania are investigating the two cable outages, while Germany’s defense minister said it suspected sabotage.

Yi Peng 3, a bulk carrier, is docked between Sweden and Denmark.
In a statement, Swedish police said “representatives of Chinese authorities are conducting an investigation on the ship and have invited Swedish authorities to take an active role” on Thursday.
They did not elaborate on the nature of the Chinese investigation, but said they are not part of the police investigation and Swedish police authorities will not carry out their own “investigative measures” on the ship. The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority is also involved.
Danish authorities are assisting the tour, according to Swedish police.
