When Adam and I arrived in Santa Barbara for rehabilitation I was treated earlier this month, I knew it was going to be good – but I didn’t expect how much fun – but I didn’t expect how much fun it was. We stayed at Paraiso, part of a stunning collection of six Spanish homes in Montecito built by some very talented friends. From the moment we arrived, surrounded by olive trees and golden light, I felt the essence I didn’t realize I needed.
Between starting the day on the beaches, wandering through the summer design shops, and walking that helped us a little, this trip was smart, its recent reset in Santa Barbara does it best. With its white stucco walls, red tile roofs, lush gardens, giant palm trees and a little European flair, it’s no wonder it’s called the Spanish Riviera of America. Here’s my personal guide to the places I love the most – where I live, eat, shop, and soak up the magic of California.
Living in Santa Barbara
Paraiso Collection, Montecito – We stayed here this trip, and it was pure perfection. The six historic homes on the property have been completely remodeled, each designed with a level of purpose and luxury that is refreshing to rent. Think: Composite Doors, natural architecture, deceptive art, and living from within the spirit. It’s the kind of space that invites you to slow down, pour a glass of wine, and watch the sunset from the terrace.
Santa Ysidro Ranch, Montecito – An iconic hideaway that feels like stepping into another era. Lush gardens, private rooms, and the scent of citrus in the air make it one of the most romantic places to stay in California. We celebrated Adam’s birthday here with dinner Stonehouse-But it was as magical as you can imagine.
Hotel Californian, Santa Barbara – If you prefer to stay close to the city, this boutique hotel combines Moorish-inspired architecture with a modern edge. Steps from the waterfront and perfect for anyone looking for quick access to State Street and the Funk Zone.
Simpson house – This beautiful bed and breakfast features an acre of secluded English gardens just a short walk from Santa Barbara’s Art and Custon District. There are 15 guest rooms in the main house and elegant suites and curtains, each with a fireplace.
El Capitan – These tents and cabins are not your typical camping experience. Just north of Santa Barbara and right by the beach, El Capitan is the veltate glompeting stay and a great way to discover El Capitan Canyon. If you’re not cooking your own food, head to the new and delicious Canyon Market and Deli. Perfect trip with kids!
Where to eat
Breakfast
Field + Fort, Summerland – Set up our first morning with one of my all-time favorites. It’s a hybrid approach and a home shop that feels like something out of a European village. The coffee is great, the avocado toast is top notch, and you can browse their limited collection of ceramics and linens while you wait.
Jeannines – Stop for an excellent breakfast at this place that is always full of locals. With three locations, it’s easy to find one near you!
D’angelos – This little Snug Bhedry offers homemade Stores, cakes and other roadside snacks.
Summerland Beach Café – Fenced back, dog friendly area perfect after a morning beach walk. Expect pleasant hospitality, strong coffee, and a front porch that feels like home.
Lunch
Lily Taquería – This popular Taco shop is tucked away at the end of Downtown and serves up cheap, delicious, and delicious tacos.
A chain – Laep-back and full of new healthy options, this cafe was included in eateries, drive-ins and dead for a good reason! We stopped after a stroll down a country road and into town with one of my favorite healthy snacks.
Lilac patisserie – One of my personal favorites, this all-gluten-free bakery and cafe is a gluten-tolerant dream. We are talking about avocado toast and sandwiches made with their amazing artisan bread and to die for – tarts, cakes, pastries and cakes.
Santa Barbara Public Market – An upscale urban market with tons of different options, this is a great place for a walk and a casual lunch.
Brothers Brothers – For a fun and casual lunch or dinner, head to our brothers’ fish and chips overlooking the water.
The party and the food are boring
Stonehouse at San ysidro Ranch – We had Adam’s supper here, and it was unforgettable. Tucked away on a hill, surrounded by blooming gardens, this restaurant is the definition of romance. Seasonal Californian cuisine such as halibut with citrus bearre blanc and chocolate soufflé – makes it a meal in itself.
loquita – Spanish-Style Tapas and Craft Cocktails in a vibrant, urban-designed space. The paella and patatas bravas are debatable.
The boathouse – UpScale savefood & brunch location on Hendry’s beach with panoramic ocean views and a heated outdoor patio.
Bettina, Montecito – Modern pizzeria and neighborhood favorite known for wood-fired pizzas made from your own mill, great salads, and natural wines. Go early and sit on the Patio—pretentious but effortlessly chic.
Flor de Maiz – A water favorite to celebrate Oaxacan cuisine with a modern flair. Expect hand-crafted cocktas, mezcal-flavored cocktails, and dishes like mole negro and seafood that showcase local California ingredients through a Mexican lens. It is organic, colorful, and ideal for eating in the sun.
Lucky’s – Classic steakhouse luxury in Montecito. Perfect Martinis, oysters, and a dose of old energy.
lark – A Santa Barbara institution serving market-driven dishes in a funk setting. The kind of place that feels both buzzy and intimate, especially when eating al fresco under string lights.

ledbetter beach – A favorite for beginner beginner lessons recognized for the easy waves and laid with attitude, my husband had his first surf lesson here! There’s a nice area with picnic tables and grills if you’re feeling a little pampered.
Hendry’s beach – Super dog friendly and an easy walk to the Boathouse (mentioned above), this place is one of the area’s favorites.
Butterfly Beach – Another local favorite, a popular spot on sunny days so parking can be hard to find. There aren’t a ton of things around so be sure to pack a yummy picnic!
Things to do in Santa Barbara
Ganna Walksa’s Lotusland – An excellent botanical garden. Be sure to check out their private tours that run throughout the spring and summer.
It’s a fun place – A half-block radius from the pine, the funk area has tons of amazing wine tasting rooms, and it’s a great place to be for wineries you’ll want to hit up if you’re planning to spend the day in Santa Yneznez. Hang around for its outdoor food and local wine and craft beer.
A walk in a place of inspiration – This intermediate activity is short (a trip of 3.5 miles) and leads to the mountains of Santa Barbara and ends with an amazing view of the city. On a clear day you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the city, the coastline and maybe even the channel islands. Pro tip – Plan your walk so you end up at sunset. Trailhead: Tunnel Rd. and mission rd., Santa Barbara, CA 93190
Purpose – Founded in 1786, the mission is one of Santa Barbara’s most historic and beautiful landmarks. You can declare a working week and explore the grounds – where you will see the art of the 17th century, the re-creation of the living room and kitchen, fine art.
Santa Barbara Courthouse – With its Spanish-Colonial style, hand-painted themed murals and stunning views from the top of the clock tower, this is a must see! Fun fact: Gwyneth Paltrow married Chris Martin here! Be sure to check the schedule of events to see if there is an outdoor movie going on in the Courthouse’s Sunken Gardens. Movie shows are free and usually start at 8:30 PM. Bring snacks, jackets and a cozy blanket!
Solvang – After a quick (35 km north of SB) and a nice drive through the mountains, you will find yourself in the Canish Capital of America. Take in the city’s many shops, Bakeries, Windmills, 15+ wine tasting rooms and stop at the Copenhagen sausage garden for DOUSAGE for FREE!
Where to shop
Source, Summerland – A curated mix of home, garden, and lifestyle pieces that feel like a masterclass in California design. Hand-thrown pottery, antique wooden furniture, and molded planters – everything here has a soul.
Montecito Country Mart & Coast Village Road – For higher purchases that still feel ineffective. You’ll find Jenni Kayne, measure the label, and locally owned boutiques with timeless fashion and home.
Doctor of the Goddess Bookstore, Summerland – My most recent guess. It’s small, cute, and full of great reads, magazines, and indie titles. They also serve excellent espresso, so it’s easy to lose an hour or two here.

Every time I come home from Santa Barbara, I feel refreshed. Maybe it’s the salt air, maybe it’s the design inspiration around every corner, or maybe it’s the time that seems to slow down enough to notice the beauty in the little things.
Whether you’re craving a creative reset, a romantic weekend, or the perfect escape, Santa Barbara has a rare way of giving you exactly what you didn’t know you needed. I can’t wait to go back – and when I do, you’ll find me in the middle of the farmers market and some long, thin dinners under the stars.
