Stantec, a progressive design and engineering firm has been awarded a contract by the City of Toronto in Canada to provide Owner Engineer/Technical Consulting Services for the FG Gardiner Expressway Rehabilitation Project Phase 4.
The company will deliver multidisciplinary engineering consulting services, including planning, procurement, and post-construction phases.
Stantec’s involvement in the project comes after its acquisition in early 2024 of Morrison Hershfield, which strengthened its transportation team in Ontario and enhanced its presence in the Greater Toronto Area.
The Gardiner Expressway, a vital Canadian artery with 140,000 vehicles daily, needs a multi-year renovation to deal with wear and tear from age, use, weather, and salt.
The complexity of the project is enhanced by its location near established areas and downtown Toronto.
Phase 4 involves restoring 2.2km of the elevated road from Grand Magazine Street to York Street, including 91 bridges and five offramps.
The rehabilitation strategy will include structural changes, desk replacement, and substructure rehabilitation.
The Phase 4 contract is valued at C$24m ($18.9m).
Stantec’s previous contributions to the City of Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway Rehabilitation Program include Phase 2 work and Phase 1 contract management, as well as Phase 5 preliminary design.
In addition to the Gardiner Expressway, Stantec has been instrumental in delivering many major transportation projects throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
These include the Toronto Subway Program, the Ontario Line, the Hazel McCallion Line, the Waterfront East Light Rail Transit Extension, the Highway 401/409 Rail Tunnel, and the rehabilitation and reconstruction of 63 bridges in the city.
In September 2024, Island Health selected Stantec as the lead consultant for three new long-term care homes on Vancouver Island to improve care for senior citizens in the Canadian province of British Columbia.
