Memecoins have been the biggest story of this cycle, with Solana-based tokens stealing the spotlight throughout 2024. The trend looks set to continue this year after Solana’s Pump.fun had a record breaking January 1, 2025.

Last year, Pump.fun established itself as the most popular token launcher to facilitate the creation of memecoins and facilitate token transfers. During Q3 2024, launchpad surpassed Ethereum and many Solana agreements, doubling the revenue and income of these projects.

The incredible success of Pump.fun has seen the creation of several competitors, including the Tron-based SunPump and the multi-chain platform GraFun. Despite being banned in the UK in December, launchpad’s performance remained steady, recording daily revenue of between $2 million and $3 million throughout the month.

As of this writing, the platform has used 5.39 million tokens since launch and generated more than 2.02 million SOL, which is worth $418.7 million at current prices. In addition, the Solana launchpad launched in 2025 on a new record date, surpassing its previous milestone.

According to Dune Analytics data, Pump.fun registered 72,506 SOLs, about $15 million, in daily revenue this Wednesday. This performance represents an increase of nearly 30% from the 55,000 SOL recorded in late November.

Additionally, launchpad continued to dominate the Solana decentralized exchange (DEX) last month. Dune data shows that Pump.fun related transactions accounted for 52.8% of all SOL DEX activity in December.

Memecoin Mania Continues Despite Criticism

The success of the platform also brought a lot of criticism. In late 2024, Pump.fun received criticism after several users broadcast harmful and violent content using its Livestream feature.

At the end of November, users created many memecoins using controversial commands to go viral and pump their tokens. The trend started after a 12-year-old kid live-streamed memecoin.

Amidst this live-streaming frenzy, Solana launchpad registered its biggest day of revenue, recording 55,832 SOLs, worth nearly $11 million, in one day. However, this incident caused a backlash from the crypto community and a temporary shutdown of the feature.

In addition, on-chain data analysis company Lookonchain reported that Pump.fun has invested more than 355,608 SOL on Kraken in the last day. This brings the number of tokens sent to the exchange to 1,564,064 SOL and the amount sold to 264,373 SOL for 41.64 million USDC.

The transfer and sale of the platform also received a lot of backlash, with community members drawing comparisons between the Solana-based launchpad and the Ethereum Foundation.
