SHINOBI: Gaza is the most powerful bitcoin demonstration since Wikileaks

BTC for Palestine is a perfect example of a Bitcoin-sponsored effort that hits right at the heart of what Bitcoin should be. Money works without trusted intermediaries. The whole point of Bitcoin was to give people a way to trade their money that no one could tamper with, interfere with, or rent.

That is the situation Gazans found themselves in last year. It is completely cut off from the rest of the world, unable to implement any form of cashless payment without relying on those who have placed themselves at the center of all digital payment processing around the world. The difference between them and the average Westerner is that they rely on aid to survive, and meet basic needs. They are not just angry or holding bad service or annoying payments.

These people are slaughtered as if they were animals locked in a barn, it is a systematic killing. They are completely cut off from normal payment channels to accept donations of food, water, and other necessities. Even the aid provided by the UN is being taken away and disrupted. Bitcoin is the only option for people who wish to donate money to help the destitute people of Gaza.

This is one of the most important demonstrations of why Bitcoin is a necessity in the world since Wikileaks started accepting it 13 years ago in 2011 by responding to banks and processing payments against them.

Back then it was a direct battle about the ability to use information to hold the government accountable for their actions and deception. Now it is a matter of helping the people who are suffering directly under the actions of those governments who continue to avoid being held accountable.

Yusef Mahmoud, a taxi driver before the genocide started, was able to help thousands of Gazans who were left in need and buy food and water and nothing last year thanks to Bitcoin. One man, who has a way of receiving financial aid from all over the world that no one can interfere with or stop, has been able to make such a big difference in the lives of thousands of people.

This is what Bitcoin does, acting as a tool to enable us to resist what governments and institutions impose on us without being able to stop that tool from working. It’s not just a new asset class, or a toy for Wall Street, it’s the basis for self-organization to solve problems that governments can’t, or create themselves.

Ours, not theirs.
