Why is Sharad Purnima celebrated?
This festival is celebrated every year on the full moon day of Ashwin month. It is believed that on this day nectar rains from the rays of the moon. Therefore, on Purnima night, Kheer is kept in the moonlight as it is believed that eating it after keeping it in the moonlight brings peace, happiness and prosperity in the house. Sharad Purnima 2024: Significance
The Hindu festival Sharad Purnima is related to the worship of the Moon God, named Chandra. According to Hindu tradition, newly married women vow to observe the Purnimasi fast for a whole year starting on this day.
The festival is also known as Raas Purnima in Brij district, it commemorates the night when Lord Krishna performed the Maha-Raas, the divine dance of love. Accompanying Gopi, Krishna is believed to have created many of his forms and miraculously lengthened the night to last one night of Lord Brahma, which is equivalent to billions of human years.
