Singer Shaan said his contemporaries, the late KKhe refused to inject a theatrical flair into his singing, which may have been the reason why he did not sing too many songs for A-list stars. Shaan said that he advised KK to put more effort into his singing so that he can sing big songs, but the late singer insisted on sticking to the truth. This worked for him towards the end of his life, when younger composers began to value honesty in his voice over the art of placement that Shaan often relied on.
Appearing on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Shaan was asked about his fellow singers of the 2000s, and said that he was very excited about Sonu Nigam’s comeback despite being disappointed at work. He said he expects the same retribution. Even though he recently sang the endings of the usual songs, Shaan said that he is still waiting for the progress that will give him back the energy that is being watched.

Asked about the evergreen quality in his and KK’s voice, he said, “KK even more so. I was very comfortable singing ‘film’, keeping the personality of the hero in mind and add some flair to my performance. KK always maintained a strict filter of honesty in his singing style. Maybe the flamboyance wasn’t too much. Yes, he sang for Emraan Hashmi, and did a few songs for Shah Rukh Khan, but not to that extent. And that’s because his singing had no ‘film’. And I would say to him, ‘KK, put some bravery in your voice’, and he would say, ‘Brother, I live the way I live’.
Shaan said that this loyalty worked for KK later. “The next generation of composers wanted KK to sing for us more than what we want,” he said. Asked why, Shaan said, “Because they could go along with that singing; they didn’t think it was too bright, too over the top. His voice had a sound, a certain honesty, a certain authenticity… They wanted that direct singing.”
born Krishnakumar Kunnath, KK died in 2022 after suffering a cardiac arrest during a concert in Kolkata. He was 53 years old.
