After three years, Separation is finally back with its second season, and things are still as mysterious and confusing as ever.
The good news? After a confusing start, where it appears that Mark (Adam Scott) has put his team in a position, he finally meets Dylan (Zach Cherry), Irving (John Turturro), and Helly (Britt Lower). Bad news? Helly decides to lie to them about what she saw outside at the end of Season 1.
‘Severance’ Season 2 may already be the best show of the year: Review
What happened to Helly in between Separation Season 2, episode 1?
We knew from the last episode of Season 1 who Helly really is off the cut floor: She’s actually Helena Eagan, a direct descendant of Lumen founder/CEO Kier Eagan and the daughter of Lumon’s current CEO. While he’s out he takes the stage to give a speech, telling the bewildered audience that the innies are “prisoners,” saying, “They’re torturing us down there!” before dealing with security.
In the first episode of the second season, however, Helly has a different story for her friends. Instead of telling them who he is outside, he tells them that when he woke up, he was alone in the house.

“I was watching a nature show on TV, wearing pants and a t-shirt,” said Helly. “I went outside and found a boy; he looked like a gardener. I told him everything. I think he thought it was a bull, but he said his brother was a policeman and he would tell him everything. I don’t know. I’m sorry, guys.
Why does Helly lie to others about what she saw?
There are only three possible explanations for why Helly might lie to others. First, and probably most likely, is that you are shy. His friend is not just an employee at Lumon – he is one of the top. To some extent, you are responsible for what the innies go through on the designated floor. Maybe Helly is lying because she doesn’t want her friends to think badly of her?
The second option is that he is lying because Lumon has some power over him. Perhaps they force him to tell a certain story, and threaten him with something bad that will happen if he doesn’t.
The third and most likely option is that she is not Innie Helly at all. Maybe, just maybe, Helly rejoined Mark and his fellow outie, Helena, who disguised herself as her child to gain knowledge of what others know.
