Troops killed four gunmen in Manipur, Imphal East and Kangpokpi districts and captured three others following a gunfight last week, police said on Monday (December 30, 2024).

“These villages were destroyed after a major operation carried out two days ago in many areas on the border of Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi where gunfire erupted after gunmen from the hills attacked these low-lying areas,” said a police statement.

“All the armed criminals involved in the recent shooting incidents in Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi have been destroyed. Four illegal banks were destroyed and three others were occupied by security forces in the valley and mountains,” the statement said.

In addition, a joint force of the army, BSF and CRPF have also taken control positions in Uyok Ching in Kangpokpi district.

On Friday (December 27, 2024), four people, including policemen and a woman, were injured in gun attacks in Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi villages.

Armed gunmen from the neighboring hills of Kangpokpi district launched a gun attack in the lowlands of Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi, leading to gun battles with local security forces and volunteers.

More than 250 people have been killed and thousands displaced in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo in Manipur since May last year.
