Next month’s Champions League match between Atletico Madrid and Lille could see a record number of disabled fans in the stands.
The Spanish club teamed up with AccessibAll, a group that promotes better access to sports for disabled fans, with the aim of breaking the record for the highest number of disabled supporters attending a football match.
Atletico will host Lille on October 23 at the Civitas Metropolitano stadium.
The program, which is supported by the Spanish authorities, “aims to promote participation in football, making it easier for disabled fans to experience the joy of attending live matches, AccessibAll said in a statement.
According to UEFA, the world’s most inclusive soccer match took place last year when 1,740 disabled fans attended the Benito Villamarin stadium for a match between Betis and Real Valladolid.
Other groups include the Integrated Dreams organization, which also works to increase the representation of people with disabilities in sports, and the World Football Summit involved in the latest attempt to achieve this record.
