“With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of the death of our beloved friend, known to the world as OG Maco,” the singer’s family wrote on Friday, December 27, in an Instagram statement on his official page. “His life was a testament to tenacity, creativity and boundless love. Through his music, love and unwavering spirit, he touched many lives and left a lasting impact. “
The statement continued, “While we are saddened by this great loss, we also celebrate the amazing life he lived – one that will continue to inspire and uplift others.” Maco’s influence, as an artist and as a person, will always be etched in our hearts.”
The cause of death of Maco, whose real name is Benedict Chiajulam Ihesiba Jr., has not been made public. Earlier it was reported that he had a gunshot wound. TMZ reported earlier this month that police were called to Maco’s Los Angeles home after shots were fired. According to the outlet, Maco was then taken to a local hospital for surgery.
“He is currently in critical but stable condition,” a Dec. 16 statement from Macy’s family read. “He is receiving the best care and we are always hopeful as he continues to fight. … Thank you for your understanding, support and continued prayers during this difficult time.”
Maco is survived by his parents and older sister.
“For those wishing to offer condolences, share memories or connect with the family, please contact the account,” Friday’s statement said. “Your support means more than words can express. To all Maco fans, friends and supporters: thank you for standing by him throughout his journey.”
The message concluded, “Today, we celebrate a life that was extraordinary in every way. With love and gratitude, the OG Maco family. “

“It’s so crazy because every day I wake up, and I’m so famous,” he joked to Vice later that year. “I think it’s like this for everyone in the city who ends up being successful. It was a long time to say ‘You’re angry because, you know, I’m good! And no one is paying attention!’”
At that time, Maco noted that he drew on his emotions to create his tracks.
“I’m getting out of it. But because I can rap, it’s not just shouting,” he explained to this newspaper. “It’s formatted, but it’s really my pure emotion.”
