The Connecticut medical examiner’s office confirmed to ABC News on Wednesday, September 25, that Fatman Scoop (real name Isaac Freeman III) died of a heart attack.
Last month news broke that the singer died at the age of 56 after collapsing at a concert in Connecticut. He was taken to the hospital after CPR was administered on stage.
“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of the legend and celebrity Fatman Scoop. Last night, the world lost a shining soul, a bright light on stage and in life,” a statement from the late rapper’s family read on August 31. “Fatman Scoop was not only a world-class player, he was a father. , brother, uncle and friend. He was the laughter in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength and courage.”
The statement continued, “As we mourn the loss of Fatman Scoop, we also celebrate this incredible life and the countless lives he touched. Fatman Scoop’s legacy of love and brilliance, will live on in our hearts and memories forever.”
Fatman Scoop was well known for his guest spots Missy Elliott‘s “Lose Control” and Mariah Carey‘I like that.
“Fatman Scoop was known around the world as the undisputed voice of the group,” his family concluded. “His music made us dance and embrace life in a joyful way. His joy was contagious and the generosity he showed to all will be deeply missed but never forgotten.”
Fatman Scoop is survived by his two children, who he shared with his ex-partner.

“Prayers to the Fatman Scoop family for STRENGTH during this difficult time,” Elliott, 53, wrote via X on August 31. “Fatman Scoop VOICE & energy has contributed to MANY songs that make people feel happy and want to dance for over two decades . . . your EFFECT is HUGE and will NEVER be forgotten.”
Music producer Pure Cold (aka Birch Michael) also remembered the late star in a poignant tribute.
“He taught me to be the man I am today. I love you Scoop. Thank you so much for everything you have given me,” wrote Pure Cold on Instagram. “I’m really speechless. You have taken me all over the world and made me act alongside you in some of the biggest and greatest stages in this world, the things you have taught me are true. [sic] you made me the man I am today.”
