After a day of reeling under the wettest September day since 2020, Mumbai awoke to another day of heavy showers on Friday morning, taking the city’s seasonal average to over 3,000mm.
While heavy rains continue to lash Mumbai—prompting the IMD to sound a yellow alert for the city and neighboring districts, meteorologists have indicated that the intensity will ease over the weekend.
Data provided by the meteorological department showed that the Santacruz station received 74mm of rain between Thursday and Friday morning while the coastal monitoring station in Colaba recorded 43mm during the same period. In the last 24 hours ending at 8 am on Friday, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) weather stations (AWS) also recorded an average rainfall of 74.46mm in the western areas, 49.07mm in the eastern areas, and 22.93 mm in the island city.

Meanwhile, throughout Friday, Mumbai continued to receive moderate to heavy rain, with showers intensifying during the day. Due to the heavy spells, the IMD has upgraded its forecast for Friday, placing Mumbai and Thane districts under a yellow alert amid ‘heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and gusty winds’.
Although weather experts attributed the continuous heavy rain to the trough and westerlies, they indicated that the intensity of the rain will ease over the weekend.
Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, told the Indian Express, “Though there is a trough, the heavy showers in the region are the result of strong westerlies. However, the upper cyclonic circulation over Maharashtra has now weakened and hence, the intensity of rains is expected to decrease from Saturday. “
With only moderate showers on the cards for Saturday, the IMD has not issued any warnings in the metropolis. The entire region is expected to experience reduced rainfall as the weather department has predicted only ‘light to moderate rains’ from Sunday.
According to public officials, during the heavy rain, at least 10 cases of falling trees, eight cases of wall collapse and two cases of wall collapse were reported across the city between Thursday and Friday.
However, no one was reported injured.
