Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi met Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday (December 11, 2024) and asked him to remove the derogatory comments made by BJP MPs against him, and ensure that the House functions properly.

Mr. Gandhi said the BJP was making “baseless” allegations against him to “distract” attention from the Adani issue, but he would not be offended by any of the allegations.

“I had a meeting with the Speaker. I told him that the bad words about me should be deleted. The Speaker said he would look into it,” said Mr. Gandhi.

“Our aim is that the House should proceed and the discussions should take place in the house. Whatever they say about me, we want a debate on the 13th of December,” said Mr. Gandhi.

“They don’t want to negotiate about Adani. Finally, we will not leave this. They will continue to make accusations against us, but the House must work,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi wrote to the Speaker, urging him to look into the party’s complaint against BJP member Nishikant Dubey’s “defamatory remarks” against Rahul Gandhi and remove them from the record.

Mr. Gogoi said that after the Speaker’s decision, the Congress party is determined to participate in the legislative business listed in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Meanwhile, when Mr. Asked about the BJP’s allegation of links between the Congress leadership and US billionaire George Soros, Gandhi said, “They will continue to make allegations, but whatever charges they make, we want the House to act. Wherever they are. Those who make charges against me, stop.”

“Although it is not our job to manage the House, we will allow the House to work 100%,” added Mr. Gandhi.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Gandhi and Congress MPs were joined by other Indian BJP MPs in greeting BJP members with placards and the national flag, as they urged them to allow the House to function.

Rahul Gandhi also met Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and wanted to present the flag but Mr. Singh continued after the discussion.
