President Draupadi Murmu on Thursday (December 5, 2024) called on agricultural scientists to develop and disseminate technology in the face of natural disasters, the adverse effects of climate change, and overexploitation of resources.
The President made these remarks while delivering his speech at the 40th convocation of the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT). He also urged agricultural scientists to come up with strategies to protect soil, water and the environment from the negative impact of climate change.

“Agriculture is facing new challenges such as natural disasters, adverse effects of climate change, shrinking farm size per capita, and overuse of natural resources. To meet these challenges, our scientists will have to develop and disseminate technology in a timely manner. We must emphasize environmental protection, soil health protection, water and soil conservation, and better use of natural resources,” said President Murmu.
He mentioned that issues related to climate change such as rising temperatures and increasing greenhouse gases have an impact on agricultural production in the country. “Agricultural scientists have an important responsibility to deal with all these issues,” he said, adding that excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides have also emerged as new challenges in the field.

“Fertilizers and pesticides that affect soil, water, and the environment is a matter of concern to everyone. Young scientists will find solutions to solve these problems,” said the President. However, he expressed satisfaction that in the last decade, India has achieved remarkable success in agricultural production and export of farm goods. “This happened because of the guidance of our agricultural scientists and the tireless efforts of our farmers,” said President Murmu.
The President said that developing agriculture, fish production, and livestock can strengthen India’s economy. he also urged the students to contribute to the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047 through their innovative ideas and selfless actions.
