The government runs several programs across the country, where low-income families with free food cards are provided. Through the program that was started during the Covid-19 crisis, about 80 million people in the country are receiving free rations. Although this program is aimed at poor people, many ineligible people still use rating cards to get these benefits. This practice deprives those who are most in need.

If you are one of those misusing this provision, beware – the government is re-verifying ration card holders across the country. If you are found ineligible, you may face fines or imprisonment.

Government Criteria for Rate Card Ineligibility

If you own a four-wheeler such as a car or a tractor, you are not eligible to hold a rating card. Households with appliances such as refrigerators or air conditioners are also ineligible. Additionally, if your annual income exceeds Rs 2 lakh in rural areas or Rs 3 lakh in urban areas, you are not eligible.

If any family member holds a government job, the entire family is considered ineligible for an adoption card. Similarly, those who pay income tax or consume luxury goods are not eligible for budgetary benefits. It is recommended that you submit your scorecard if it applies to you.

According to the rules of the department of transportation, if you own a property (house, building, or land) that is more than 100 square meters, you are not eligible to get a ration card.

In such cases, it is best to return your rating card to the district transport department and have your name removed. Failure to do so may result in heavy fines or even imprisonment if the government identifies your case during its investigation.
