Two panchayat union schools and a government-aided school in Tiruchi have bagged the Best Tamil Nadu Government School awards for 2023-24.

Subiah Memorial Middle School in Thennur, Panchayat Union Middle School in Pambattipatti village in Vaiyampatti block, and Panchayat Union Middle School in Mela Arasur village in Pullambadi block have been selected as the best schools in the district for good enrollment and academic performance .

Every year, the State government gives awards to the three best schools in the region. Schools are evaluated on a variety of criteria, including basic infrastructure, quality of education and teaching methods, technology-based teaching, school development, and student activities.

Subiah Memorial Middle School in Thennur has a strength of 200 and seven teachers. The school has smart classrooms, projectors, computers, televisions, a laboratory, and a library. With only 10 classrooms, the school is able to perform well in terms of academics and student enrollment. Students are taught English, yoga, abacus, Bharatanatyam, and Silambattam spoken classes.

The school has recorded a significant increase in capacity. “We aim to develop the school on par with private schools. Recently, parents have shown interest in enrolling their children here, and the student strength has doubled in the last five years,” said KS Jeevanandhan, principal of the school.

Breakfast bank

The Breakfast Bank Scheme, a new effort to ensure food availability for students, is being launched in 2022, where people are asked to drop off groceries used to prepare breakfast for students at the bank.

The Panchayat Union Middle School at Pambattipatti is equipped with a smart classroom, television sets, and internet connectivity to enable an interactive learning experience. Students are involved in sports and other extracurricular activities.

“We are focusing on raising awareness about environmentally friendly measures and turning waste into resources. “Students are busy preparing vermicompost and gardening,” said Marceline Regina, the school’s principal.

Similarly, the teachers of Mela Arasur Panchayat Union Middle School have a strength of 295 and teach both in Tamil medium and English. Clubs are formed in each subject, and students are encouraged to participate in competitions such as speaking, writing and fine arts. The school has appealed to the management to upgrade it to a secondary school to cope with the increase in students.

The schools will receive the award on November 14 in Chennai.
