After previewing earlier this year, Sora, OpenAI’s long-awaited video production model, is ready for public use. If you’ve signed up for ChatGPT Plus or Pro in the US or “many other countries” where the chatbot is available, you can start trying out the tool starting later today, OpenAI announced Monday. A more powerful model powers the product than what OpenAI showed off in February. Sora Turbo is very fast, according to the company, although OpenAI warns the new model still has limitations. “It often produces unrealistic physics and struggles with complex actions for long periods of time,” the company said.
When users first visit the dedicated landing page that OpenAI created for Sora, they will be greeted with a video feed that the model has created for them. By clicking on the video, you’ll be able to see the exact information someone gave Sora to make the video you’re seeing. From here, you can also decide to re-cut the video, combine it into a working clip, or remix it. In this first release, OpenAI limits Sora to producing videos up to 1080p and 20 seconds in length.
ChatGPT Plus subscribers can use Sora to create up to 50 480p videos per month. Alternatively, Plus users can create a few (and short) videos in 720p. OpenAI claims that the Pro version offers 10 times the performance, with higher resolutions and longer durations. “We are working on compatible pricing for different types of users, which we plan to make available early next year,” the company added.
For security purposes, each video has an automatically visible watermark and contains C2PA metadata to aid identification. OpenAI says it will prevent users from using Sora to create child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and sexual deepfakes. Broadly, the company plans to limit human uploads until it has time to refine its defenses against deepfakes.
Even if you don’t have a ChatGPT subscription, you can still visit the Sora website to see what other people are using the tool to create. During today’s live stream, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said it may take some time before Sora arrives in Europe and the UK.
