OpenAI announces Projects to organize and customize your ChatGPT chats

On the seventh day of the “12 days of OpenAI,” the company announced Projects on ChatGPT – a way to customize and organize your conversations.

Well, not all of them are going to be bangers. But this one has been found useful by the OpenAI team in creating and organizing various projects by pulling the various capabilities of ChatGPT into one place. That includes canvas support and web connectivity with ChatGPT Search.

Why is ChatGPT’s Santa Mode only for ages 13 and up?

Today’s announcement wasn’t a major technological breakthrough like Sora or GPT-5 (if that’s still happening). Instead, it focuses on improving the user experience to make ChatGPT more of an all-in-one app, a way for you to write, research, edit, search the web, and soon to do multi-step tasks. It may not have been the most exciting update, but it points to OpenAI’s plans to further embed ChatGPT into everyday life.

In the demo, CPO Kevin Weil, joined by Drew Schuster of OpenAI and Thomas Dimson showed how Projects can be used to create a Secret Santa project. Schuster uploaded the Secret Santa group and their requests, then asked ChatGPT to randomly share. He then asks ChatGPT to write an email to the group. In one example, Schuster uploaded notes about various household items and used ChatGPT to ask when he should change the water filter in his refrigerator. This is useful if you are very organized and already jot down important notes about home maintenance. Or you can look at your notes.

Moving forward, Dimson used Projects to build a personal website while relying on ChatGPT’s Canvas to customize the website template. ChatGPT recognized the template code and made the appropriate changes.

Projects have been sent (live in live streaming) to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Teams users, while Enterprise and Edu users get the feature early in the new year.
