Lobo, 31, helped a woman who was drowning during a training session on the coast of São Luís, Brazil, on Friday, January 10. “The day God used me as an instrument to save this lady, all honor and glory to Him. ☝🏻🙏🏻,” Lobo wrote in the caption (translated from Portuguese) accompanying the photo he recorded of the incident on Instagram on Saturday, January 11. “Be aware of the dangers of the sea, rivers and any place you don’t know because the current in some places is often very strong!”
Lobo explained that he entered the sea around 5:40 pm local time to “do a final check” on his board camera. “It was a cloudy day, the weather conditions were not good, but I decided to check the support that came, it was the first day I used this thing, I set the camera to record and went to the beach,” he said.
He continued: “After sailing a few meters I heard people crying for help and I saw a girl who was drowning.” I quickly approached him with a kite, tried to calm him down and asked him to ride on my back. He was very tired and had no energy.”

Lobo used his equipment to help bring the woman back to shore, where lifeguards would come to her aid. “I thank God that everything went well 🙏🏻🙌🏻,” he concluded. “Thank you for all the messages. I did what I had to do and what I could!”
In Lobo’s photos, he immediately turned around when he saw a woman in the water. He got off his kiteboard and ordered her to hold on to his back as he swam to the beach. Rescuers met the two in shallow water and helped the woman to the beach, where she thanked Lobo for saving them with a kiss.
The governing body of the sport, World Sailing, has praised Lobo’s actions. “The woman met friends on the beach and left unscathed,” the organization wrote in an Instagram post on January 13. “Lobo, an orthopedic surgeon, said humbly: ‘I’m only doing my job and I’m in the right place at the right time.’ He also issued an important reminder: ‘The sea is very dangerous, and the waves can take you out.’ 🌊 Good job Bruno 👏🫶.”

As Lobo made his Olympic debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics, so did kitesurfing. Sports and other surfing events take place on the Tahiti island of Teahupo’o. Lobo did not reach the podium during the Games but finished seventh in the men’s kitesurfing event.
