NASA Takes Urgent Action to Keep Voyager 2 Alive

Although energy conservation has become the most important part of storage Voyager 2, it is not the first time scientific instruments have been disabled to save energy.

Many instruments were shut down after leaving the solar system, as they were very useful for studying transiting planets. Both crafts were launched with 10 different scientific instruments, many of which were turned off or stopped working.

As Voyager 2 approaching its 50th year in space, it’s amazing that it’s still sending useful information back to Earth from 12.8 billion kilometers away. It collects valuable data about the universe outside our solar system, something we know very little about.

The loss of the plasma science device is a reminder that its use is waning, but with only four working devices left, the campaign is still going strong.
