Days after a city bus killed seven people and injured 42 others in Mumbai, the city’s transport department has blamed “human error” and “lack of proper training” for the horrific accident.
The report of the officials of the Regional Transport Office (RTO), who conducted an investigation after the accident, said that it seems that the bus driver could not drive the bus without a clutch and gears like normal buses, and he may not have been given one. proper training before being allowed to drive a 12 meter long bus.
“If the driver doesn’t have the experience of driving an automatic bus, he doesn’t get proper judgment about the speed and braking in the beginning. Therefore, it seems that human error caused the accident,” an RTO official was quoted as saying by the news. PTI center.
On December 9, a bus operated by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) rammed into pedestrians and vehicles at around 9.30 pm on SG Barve Marg in Mumbai’s Kurla (West) killing seven people and injuring 42. The bus driver, Sanjay More, 54, was arrested after the incident.

In the RTO inspection, officials also found that the brakes and all other systems, including the front lights of the bus, were working properly, ruling out any technical malfunction behind the accident.
According to RTO sources, the electric bus was just three months old as it was registered under the name EVEY TRANS on August 20, 2024. The driver was provided by a third party agency in Pune.
The inspection team examined all the three CCTV cameras installed inside the bus, and their footage suggests that the entire scare took place within 52 to 55 seconds, sources said.
“The whole panic happened within 52-55 seconds,” said an official of news agency PTI, adding that, according to BEST records, the driver signed off for work on December 6 at around 2.45 pm, and the accident happened at approx. 9.35 p.m.
