Athletics is officially like that.
After playing the last 57 seasons in Oakland, the Athletics will now spend at least the next three years in Sacramento before moving to Las Vegas.
But, despite calling the new part of California home, the state capital will not appear in the name of the team – they will be known simply as “Athletics.”

The move was mocked when the Major League Baseball schedule was released in the summer, and the team was abbreviated simply as ATH. Perhaps at the time, it was unknown whether they would be considered the Sacramento A’s or not.
According to Front Office Sports, the team released “brand change guidelines” this week, including dropping the team’s name spot for the next three years.
Recently, teams have gone with the name of the city but no mascot (Washington football team, Utah Hockey Club, for example).
The Athletics first played in Philadelphia in 1901 before moving to Kansas City before the 1955 season. The organization has called Oakland home since 1968.

They will be playing at Sutter Health Park, home of their rivals The San Francisco Giants‘ Triple-A affiliate, Sacramento River Cats, before moving to southern Nevada.
The Warriors, Raiders and A’s have all left Oakland since 2020.
The move to Vegas wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows — the band wanted to start playing there in 2027, but even the city’s mayor said the band’s plan to move there “doesn’t make sense.”
Athletics signed a binding agreement to purchase 49 acres for a new stadium, but had to change their proposed stadium location after finding a new site that required less than $105 million.

The proposed new location is where the now-demolished Tropicana once stood. The stadium will cost about $1.5 billion, and Bally will build a new hotel/casino across from the stadium when it’s finished.
