A Chinese man was left in a well for three days after the locals did not understand his cries for ghostly sounds. The incident happened near the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Liu Chuanyi, 22, was exploring the area when he fell into a well hidden by overgrown vegetation.

According to the The Deccan Chroniclethe people of this area heard a cry coming from the well and said it was the sound of ghosts. By the time Chuanyi was rescued, she was weak, and had severe injuries including bruises, a concussion, and a broken wrist. Reports also said that Chuanyi would call out for help once an hour to conserve his energy.

Thailand’s Universal Daily News reported that local police in Mae Sot, Tak province, near the Thai-Myanmar border, received complaints of strange cries in the forest on November 24. As police and rescue teams began searching the forest to investigate, they shouted and heard voices answering. The rescue operation took 30 minutes.

Authorities contacted immigration officials to find out why Chuanyi was near the Thai-Myanmar border. Meanwhile, he is out of harm’s way and steps are being taken to seal the well.
