Changing the way people view beauty pageants. Hit 2000 movie Miss Congeniality follows FBI agent Gracie (Sandra Bullock) as she goes undercover in a beauty pageant to prove herself at work to her male colleagues (played by Benjamin Bratt again Ernie Hudson).
Having been a tomboy all her life, the head of the pageant, Kathy Morningside (Candice Bergen), asks expert Victor Melling (Michael Caine) to get Gracie ready to compete through a rigorous conditioning process. Throughout the film, the police officer forms unexpected friendships, romances and is shocked to uncover the life-threatening events that take place at the event.
In 2000, Ellen DeGeneres revealed in an interview that the rom-com is actually based on him.
“When I was preparing to host the Emmys, the writer saw me [on TV] learning to walk in a dress and heels,” he said The Parade magazine at the time. “My stylist at that time – a man – was teaching me, and it was fun. I Miss Congeniality the writer saw it and thought it was clever.”
Despite being based on a TV host, Bullock is also closely related to Grace, later admitting that doing the fight scenes – and doing many of his stunts – was easier than the competition scenes. Moreover, he told Entertainment Tonight that he tried to cut the swimming pool.
“That was a big bone of contention for me. I’ve been trying to get it written many times,” he said Speed the actor shared. ‘It’s in the text. We’ve already shot it—out in San Antonio.”
