Surgeons at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi removed a tumor weighing 1.5 kg from the right side of the patient’s liver and saved his life on Monday.
According to an official statement, the patient, a 75-year-old man from Thirunedunkulam, Tiruchi, was admitted with abdominal pain in the medical ward on December 26, 2024. On examination, he was found to have a liver mass, and as a result, his case was taken over by the Department of Gastroenterology on January 1 for further treatment. and investigation.
A lesion, measuring 15 cm x 10 cm, showing features of Hepatocellular carcinoma was found in the right lobe of the liver. The surgical team decided to perform a diagnostic laparoscopy and a proper hepatectomy (a procedure to remove part or all of the liver) to save the patient’s life.
Since the tumor was so large, the patient had to undergo a major procedure to remove up to 60% of the liver, with adequate margins. Since the liver is a vascular organ that receives 1,200 ml of blood per minute, the blood vessels had to be carefully dissected to stop the blood flow.
Under the direction of S. Kumaravel, director, KAP Viswantham Medical College, MGMGH medical superintendent Udhaya Aruna and deputy superintendent Arun Raj, the surgical team led by RR Kannan, performed the four-hour operation on Monday.
The patient’s post-operative care will include pain and fluid management, liver function monitoring to check for dysfunction, and follow-up imaging to check for tumor recurrence, the statement said.
