McDonald’s and several government agencies are still investigating the cause of the E. coli linked to fast-food chain Quarter Pounder hamburgers, and the company confirmed Wednesday that beef had not been ruled out as a possible cause.
The CDC said Tuesday it is warning that the agency, along with the FDA, USDA, FSIS and public health officials in several states, are investigating after 49 people became ill, most of whom reported eating it. Quarter Pounders before getting sick. Ten have been hospitalized and one has died linked to the outbreak.

McDonald’s spokespeople said Wednesday that the CDC notified the company of the outbreak last week, and that the company is working with relevant agencies to determine whether beef or onions — two ingredients in the sandwich that could be carriers of E. coli – are the cause.

McDonald’s also takes a close look at the freshly picked onion used as an ingredient because it is a single source green ingredient. However, if onions are determined to be the cause, it would be the first time onions have been the source of an outbreak of this type of E. coli – E. coli O157:H7.

The CDC advises that anyone who develops symptoms of E. coli symptoms such as high fever, diarrhea, vomiting or dehydration after eating a Quarter Pounder should call their healthcare provider.
