Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) delivered the last Scorpene-class submarine, Vaghsheer, to the Indian Navy on Thursday, completing Project 75. The acceptance documents were signed by Sanjeev Singhal, Chairman-cum- Managing Director (CMD) of MDL, and Rear Admiral R Adhisrinivasan, Chief of Staff (Technical), in the presence of senior officers from both MDL and Navy.
This marks the completion of Project 75, a key initiative in efforts to prevent Indian degenization. Under the project, MDL is building six Scorpene-class submarines with the help of the French Navy.
“The delivery of Vaghsheer is a milestone for MDL’s capabilities,” Singhal said. “This project strengthens the operational readiness of the Indian Navy and supports the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative,” he added.
Vaghsheer includes advanced weapon systems and enhanced operational capabilities, augmenting India’s underwater combat capabilities. Its induction into the Navy follows the successful completion of MDL contract obligations under Project 75, marking the shipyard as the only one in India with a proven capability to build advanced conventional submarines.
“This delivery confirms MDL’s position as a leader in defense manufacturing,” said Rear Admiral Adhisrinivasan. “It is a step forward in strengthening Indian maritime security,” he added.
