Mattu Pongal Palamedu Jallikattu continues in Madurai, as Avaniyapuram contest suffers one death – Tamil Nadu News


The much-awaited Palamedu Jallikattu, the world famous bull-taming sport, began on the second day of Pongal in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai, which is celebrated as Mattu Pongal. This event, known for its rich culture, has attracted thousands of spectators and participants. This year, more than 1,000 bulls and 900 bull tamers have been registered for this event, which is celebrated with enthusiasm and excitement across the region.

The event, which has been a part of Tamil Nadu’s culture for centuries, offers huge prizes to the winners. Best bull car and best bull tractor are among the top prizes. Chief Minister MK Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin sponsored several prizes, including gold coins, bicycles, and household items.

Along with a large police presence of 2,400 personnel, a dedicated medical team of 25 doctors and seven teams of veterinarians have been tasked with ensuring the safety of both participants and animals.

However, on the first day of Pongal. Naveen Kumar, a 30-year-old from Vilankudi, lost his life after being stabbed in the chest by a bull at the Avaniyapuram Jallikattu restaurant. He was rushed to Rajaji Government Hospital but did not survive his injuries. Naveen’s sister, Aarthi, has sought a meeting with the District Collector, seeking justice for her brother’s death.

Naveen, who had participated in Jallikattu since the age of 14, reportedly drove an auto rickshaw for a living.
