Manipur: Self-proclaimed Kuki outfit commander shot dead in Churachandpur

A self-proclaimed Kuki-based underground outfit commander was found shot dead near the gate of the Anglo-Kuki War Centenary, near Leisang in Churachandpur in Manipur on Tuesday morning.

The commander has been identified as Seikhohao of Kaprang village in Churachandpur district. Police said he was the city commander of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA).

According to the police, the incident took place around 12:15 am on Tuesday, and he was found shot in an area about 1.5 km from Torbung Bungalow in Churachandpur.

The district police recovered the body, and it has been sent to Churachandpur Medical College Mortuary.

The police are yet to determine who committed this crime.

Ethnic violence between the Meitei and the Kuki community, which started last year, has escalated recently. The violence started in May last year after a tribal unity march in the hill districts of the state protested against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Since then, more than 220 people from the Kuki and Meitei communities and the security forces have been killed in the violence.
