Ethnic violence between the Meitei and the Kuki community, which started last year, has escalated recently. The violence started in May last year after a tribal unity march in the hill districts of the state protested against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
Since then, more than 220 people from the Kuki and Meitei communities and the security forces have been killed in the violence.
