In a relief to those traveling to the national capital, the Maharashtra Cabinet has decided to abolish the toll at all five Mumbai exits. From midnight today (October 14, 2024), no toll will be levied on light vehicles entering or exiting Mumbai from any of the five entry points in the city.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde made the announcement in the cabinet today (October 14, 2024), ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
The Maharashtra Assembly, which has 288 seats, will go to polls later this year. The Election Commission of India is yet to announce the election schedule.
The upcoming Maharashtra elections will see a contest between the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena party (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar’s party), and the Congress, and the ruling Mahayuti Alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde’s party. ), and NCP (Ajit Pawar’s party). In the 2019 Assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats while the Congress won 44 seats.
The ongoing Cabinet meeting began under the shadow of the assassination of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Baba Siddique. The cabinet condoled Siddique’s death. The condolence proposal was presented soon after Maharashtra Ministers met in a cabinet meeting at Sahyadri State Guest House at around 10.15 AM.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, and other Chief Ministers are present in the meeting. The police have arrested three people and have identified the fourth accused in the case. The investigation extends beyond Maharashtra.
