Lions RB David Montgomery (MCL) will miss the remainder of the 2024 season

David Montgomery has joined the growing list of Detroit Lions players who will miss the remainder of the 2024 season.

The Lions running back suffered a torn MCL during the loss to the Buffalo Bills that will require season-ending surgery, Detroit coach Dan Campbell told reporters Monday.

“We will miss him,” Campbell said.

Montgomery was one of four Lions players with long-term injuries in the loss to the Bills. Defensive end Alim McNeill suffered a season-ending ACL tear, cornerback Carlton Davis will undergo surgery on a broken jaw and linebacker Khalil Dorsey suffered a broken right leg, sidelining him for the rest of the season, according to multiple reports.

Lions coach Dan Campbell expressed fear that each player could miss the remainder of the season when speaking to reporters following Sunday’s 48-42 loss.

“We will know more about Alim once [Davis] tomorrow, but I don’t feel good about any of those guys,” Campbell said. “When I say I don’t feel good about the injury, it’s not good for the rest of the season.”

Montgomery helped build the league’s best rushing corps along with Jahmyr Gibbs for the second straight season. He rushed for 775 yards at 4.2 yards per carry and 12 touchdowns, tied for fourth most in the league.

McNeill has emerged as a key player in the Lions’ defense. He recorded 25 total sacks and 3.5 sacks this season after recording five sacks last year. The defense’s fourth-year performance in 2023 helped him earn a four-year, $97 million extension in October.

Davis started all 13 games he played for the Lions after the team traded him last season. He recorded 56 tackles, two interceptions and two fumbles in those 13 games.

Dorsey was the Lions’ best special teams player this season, playing on 71% of the team’s special teams snaps. Recorded 14 tackles this season.

The Lions already have 18 players injured, and most of them are expected to miss the rest of the season. Running back Aidan Hutchinson and linebacker Alex Anzalone address a long list of injured players. There is hope that Hutchinson can return from his broken leg injury if the Lions reach the NFC Championship Game, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer previously reported. Anzalone was expected to miss six to eight weeks after being placed on injured reserve on Nov. 18.
