Kolkata rape: installation of Durga Puja pandal depicting rape victim at RG Kar Hospital

As protests continue over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital, RG Kar, the Durga Puja committee has included Goddess Durga covering her face with her hands and the body of a woman, depicted as a trainee doctor lying on the floor. in front of the Lady and wrapped in a white cloth.

The totality of the pandal is called ‘Come on’ or shame and installation of Goddess Durga was erected as a sign of protest against the rape of a trainee doctor, whose body was found in the lecture hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The installation, placed next to a large statue of Goddess Durga, shows her covering her face with her hands to show that she is horrified by the violence against women. A majestic lion, considered the most powerful animal of Goddess Durga, has its head hung down in shame while the body of a woman, depicted as a trainee doctor, lies in front of Mvelinqangi and is wrapped in a white cloth.

Next to it is placed a doctor’s coat with a stethoscope hanging around it and a box with a Rs 500 note attached to it.

The theme was created by puja organizer Biswajit Sarkar, whose brother Abhijit Sarkar, a BJP leader, was killed in the 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal. The violence took place after the Trinamool Congress won for the third time in a row in the state Assembly elections.

“We are protesting the rape and murder of RG Kar. As a symbolic protest, Goddess Durga hides her face with her hands as she cannot see the violence against women. Her lion, which is her strongest animal, hangs. Not only is RG Kar a victim, but this installation symbolizes the violence against women in the West Bengal,” Biswajit Sarkar, who was associated with the BJP, told India Today TV.

Biswajit Sarkar said the box or ‘bandar’ placed next to Goddess Durga is a symbolic excavation in the West Bengal government system Lakshmi Bhandarfinancial assistance program for women.

“Under the rule of Mamata Banerjee, post-voting violence, rape and murder are happening. No woman is safe here. These social programs exist to divert people’s attention from reality. People who go out to vote should always remember about women’s safety and violence,” he added.

He pointed out that the police are corrupt and use illegal firearms to take them to court so that the suspects can go free.

“The state government should mend its ways. If tomorrow something happens to someone in your family, what will you do? You will go to the police. You (Mamata Banerjee) say that the court will deliver justice. But in reality, the police are corrupt and file an FIR so that the accused will be released soon,” said Biswajit Sarkar. .

Earlier on Tuesday, protesting junior doctors in West Bengal resumed their ‘complete strike’ to demand various demands, including ensuring their safety and security in all medical facilities following the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital on August 9.

On Thursday, doctors held a meeting to decide their future after a section of senior doctors called on them to reconsider their ‘total quit job’ due to the plight of ordinary patients.

Although the doctors resumed work after 42 days of strike, they went back to stop work, saying that important demands such as strengthening the safety of health workers were not met.
