Citing “unresolved” questions and the lack of action taken by some of the accused, the junior doctors said they would continue to fight for justice.
Junior doctors want a thorough investigation into all aspects of the case, including the motive and possible involvement of other people.
Dr. Aniket Mahato, who stood out in the protest movement, said, “This is just the first step. There are many unanswered questions,” pointing to the lack of action against people suspected of tampering with evidence. He also asked why those people are staying outside on bail.
The CBI, which took up the probe on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, had earlier booked the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, Sandip Ghosh for allegedly tampering with evidence. The local SHO, Abhijit Mondal, was also booked for the delay in registering the FIR for the murder. However, both were granted bail after the CBI failed to submit the case documents against them within the 90-day deadline.
Echoing similar concerns, Dr. Somyadeep Roy said, “Without explaining the motive for the crime, the investigation is still unclear.”
He accused the CBI of failing to investigate beyond the Kolkata police probe, “even though the CSFL report suggests otherwise”.
Pointing to the CFSL report, Dr Asfaqullah Naiya highlighted “inconsistencies” in the evidence. “The CFSL report revealed that the crime could have been committed elsewhere,” he said, adding that CCTV footage showed many people, but only one person had been identified.
“One person was found guilty and the trial will continue… CCTV cameras showed many people but only one person could be identified. There are many unanswered questions and our same fight will continue,” continued the young doctor.
TMC wants death penalty: ‘It will act as a deterrent’
The ruling TMC on Saturday demanded the death penalty for Sanjoy Roy, who was convicted of raping and killing a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital, stressing the need to curb such crimes.
Accepting the conviction but strongly advocated that Roy be punished severely, senior TMC MP Sougata Roy called for the death penalty, asserting that the move would be a deterrent. “This will not only serve as a warning to others who think they can avoid breaking the law, but it will also restore people’s faith in the system,” he said.
Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh criticized the opposition party for politicizing the incident. “We criticized crime from the beginning. The CM sought the death penalty. Despite the baseless allegations, the Kolkata Police arrested the perpetrator within 24 hours,” Ghosh said, adding that similar cases have led to the death penalty for the accused.
